Why did you move into recruitment?
As a junior solicitor, I worked in professional negligence; however, it wasn't particularly fulfilling. Whilst I had enjoyed studying law at university, I was far more attracted to anthropology and learning why people behave the way they do.

After realising I didn't wish to pursue a legal career I considered my options. Recruitment appealed because it combined the elements that I had enjoyed at university with the experience that I had gained in practice.

Why did you join Taylor Root?
I did consider other recruitment opportunities, but joined Taylor Root because of our Sydney and international market presence and the collegiate way the consultants worked.

What is a typical day?
The day starts when I log on and check my emails, including those from our international colleagues about overseas candidates. I work out my to-do list and action appropriately. This involves calling and meeting new and existing candidates, searching for appropriate candidates on our database, preparing CVs, speaking to and meeting with clients, arranging interviews and video conferences. I constantly liaise with other members of the private practice team about our clients, leads on new jobs or developments with candidates.

What do you enjoy about the role?
I like the variety in the job – no two days are the same (although you tend to impose a certain structure on your day as you become more experienced). I also enjoy finding out what motivates people to move. I like the autonomy involved in my role and the fact that if you prove yourself to be a successful recruiter, you are rewarded for it.

Any downsides?
The unpredictable nature of candidates (and sometimes clients) means that you may experience considerable highs and lows within a short space of time, which is initially difficult to adjust to.

What do you think makes a good recruiter?
I think a good recruiter is commercial, able to multi-task and importantly, able to sell!
